On Tuesday morning, your San Diego Seals helped put 100s of gallons of real dairy milk into the refrigerators of San Diego families facing food insecurity. Forward and Team Captain Wes Berg, defenseman Patrick Shoemay, Salty and several members of the Sirens Dance Team all took part.
It’s all made possible through a program called Gallons for Goals that’s a collaboration between the Seals, San Marcos-based Hollandia Dairy and the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank.
The program is simple. For every goal the Seals score during home games, Hollandia contributes six gallons of real dairy milk to the Food Bank. That total doubles though in the fourth quarter when Hollandia allocates 12 gallons of milk for every Seals shot that hits the back of the net during the final 15 minutes and overtime. Last season, the Seals’ offensive heroics in front of their home fans netted out to a whopping 700 gallons of milk.
“It’s exciting to be out here and to see how many jugs of milk there are and it’s nice to see in-person what we’re able to help with,” said Berg, who’s been a regular participant and one of the team’s leading contributors to Gallons for Goals. “It’s a pretty cool experience and again, being able to help out some people in need in the San Diego Community is special for us.”
Gallons for Goals was born into existence ahead of the 2021-22 Seals season and since then, more than 3,700 gallons of real dairy milk has been delivered to the San Diego Food Bank through the program.
At its core, Gallons for Goals was designed to encourage kids and families to drink real dairy milk as part of living healthy and active lives. Hollandia Dairy CEO Patrick Schallberger takes it a step further.
“We’re really into promoting kids living healthy, active lifestyles and we want them to be able to do that and be healthy,” explained Schallberger. “Milk’s a great product to get to families (in need) and it’s a joy to partner with the Seals and with the Food Bank to help get fresh milk to families. It’s really a great effort.”
Hollandia Dairy has called San Diego home for more than 75 years, while the Food Bank was established in 1977. The Seals are just pups when compared to Hollandia and the Food Bank’s respective tenures in San Diego, but it’s blossomed into an amazing collaboration.
“This is a fantastic partnership with the San Diego Food bank, the San Diego Seals and Hollandia Dairy,” said Food Bank CEO Casey Castillo. “We're grateful to all the fans as well. The milk is a much-needed item, in fact, it's a highly requested item from the folks that we serve. It's nutritious, it provides protein, and the hundreds and now thousands of gallons we’ve received have changed lives and helped feed thousands of people.”
New this year, the Food Bank is inviting the public to help support Gallons for Goals through private donations. Details on how those contributions can be made are available at https://sandiegofoodbank.donorsupport.co/page/FUNKVRCRMBS.
