Seals head to Calgary looking for their 10th win of the season

Fresh off a commanding 12-8 win over the Halifax Thunderbirds last Saturday night at Pechanga Arena, the San Diego Seals will head to Calgary this weekend looking for their 10th win of the season when they face the 5-7 Roughnecks on Friday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Faceoff is 6 p.m. PT.

The Roughnecks have been streaky of late, dropping their last two on the road at Philadelphia (9-11) and Georgia (12-13) after winning three straight.

All-time, the Seals and Roughnecks have met 11 times in the regular season and once in the playoffs. The Seals lead the all-time regular-season series 8-3 and they are 4-2 in games played in Calgary. The Roughnecks won the lone postseason meeting.

Each of the last two seasons, the Seals have scored a season-high 17 goals in Calgary.

Players to Watch
Seals forward Curtis Dickson (527 career goals) needs two goals to pass Colin Doyle (528) for seventh on the National Lacrosse League’s all-time list. Dickson also needs just one point to become the NLL’s 16th player to reach 1,000.

Austin Staats, fresh off a four-goal performance against Halifax, leads the NLL with 40 goals this season. Combined with 38 assists, Staats has 78 points on the season, good for sixth in the League.

Team Captain Wes Berg is just ahead of Staats with 79 points this season, fifth in the NLL. Berg’s 30 goals are tied for 10th in the League (2nd on the team behind Staats) while his 49 assists are sixth in the NLL and they lead the team.

Trevor Baptiste, the renowned faceoff specialist, is third in the League in faceoff wins (234). His 69% faceoff win percentage is fourth-best in the League among those with at least 250 faceoffs and Baptiste’s 132 loose balls secured is 2nd in the NLL.

Goalkeeper Chris Origlieri has the National Lacrosse League’s second-lowest goals against average (9.87) among starting netminders. He owns the NLL’s 4th best save percentage among starters (79%), while he’s fourth in the League with 492 saves on the season.

Defenseman Kyle Rubisch leads the Seals and is tied for 8th in the NLL this season with 20 takeaways.

Head Coach Patrick Merrill: Patrick Merrill is looking to guide the Seals to a fourth-consecutive playoff appearance in 2023-24. With a regular-season won-loss ledger of 49-30 (.620) since joining the Seals in 2018, Merrill’s guided the team to the playoffs in each of the three full seasons he’s been at the helm, including a berth in the 2022 West Conference Finals.
